Interesting movie
I didn't find the movie sentimental. I found the emotions in context with the tragedies that had hit the Oliver family. Colleen was a believable Mum who lost close family members in tragic circumstances. Because it is a true story and the Oliver family were involved with advising the Director, I think it is a pretty accurate record. I think the real Damien's “kiss to the heavens” at the end of the race" gives a clue to the type of family the Olivers are – not sentimental but emotional in tragedy. I found the “pace” of the movie a little fast at times – a lot happens in 106 mins – but dragging it out would have been sentimentalising and these days the audience probably would have walked. It was a good gesture from the Director to have the “real” people speaking at the end… But I won't be a spoiler. Recommended viewing. I give it ****
At the heart of this true story is Damien Oliver, a young jockey who loses his only brother in a tragic racing accident, hauntingly reflective of the way their father died 27 years earlier.
After suffering through a series of discouraging defeats, Damien teams with Irish trainer Dermot Weld and triumphs at the 2002 Melbourne Cup in one of the most thrilling finales in sporting history.
