"A reasonable attempt to film the book"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I was fascinated at the dystopian world of a high-rise building in the book which I read in a J G Ballard period of my youth. This film does not capture the flavour completely and does not feel totally convincing as it develops. I suppose one should not complain when the book (like much of Ballard's work) has long been thought in-filmable. Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons and co are watchable as ever. This is a film you should watch if you know Ballard's work – all of which is concept driven and full of characters of muddled motives descending to what outsiders would deem madness. If you expect anything other than dystopia with characters with whom you cannot identify, then stay away. As a Ballard fan, I give it 4 stars for a more than average attempt at the impossible.

Description

High-Rise

Tom Hiddleston stars as Dr. Robert Laing, the newest resident of a luxurious apartment in a high-tech skyscraper whose lofty location places him amongst societys upper class. Laing quickly settles in and meets the other tenants: Charlotte (Sienna Miller), a bohemian single mother; Wilder (Luke Evans), a charismatic documentarian who lives with his pregnant wife Helen (Elisabeth Moss); and Mr. Royal (Jeremy Irons), the buildings enigmatic architect.

Life seems like paradise to the solitude-seeking Laing. But, as power outages become more frequent and building flaws emerge, mainly on the lower floors, social strata begins to crumble and the building descends into a class war.

Critic Reviews:

  • " Has no room for subtlety. But it has plenty of style and substance. " – Kip Mooney
  • " The film's message is timely but simple. " – Olly Richards
  • " Uncompromising and disjointed, it's unapologetically weird; a film that seems likely to earn instant cult status. " – Richard Crouse
