Check out the trailer for James Frey's Endgame: The Calling. This book kicks off a trilogy that is guaranteed to be the next big thing. Endgame has its mysterious tendrils in a Google Niantic-created augmented reality game for mobile devices and the movie is already in the works.

The book itself contains clues that can lead one lucky (or clever) reader to a real world prize! The real details are enough of a secret that the advance reader copies contain fake puzzles. There goes my head start!

Our first shipment quickly sold out but we are expecting more stock any moment now. Place your order to join the hunt!

5. Underground Girls of Kabul – Jenny Nordberg

An Afghan woman's life expectancy is just 44 years, and her life cycle often begins and ends in disappointment: being born a girl and finally, having a daughter of her own. For some, disguising themselves as boys is the only way to get ahead. Nordberg follows women such as Azita Rafaat, a parliamentarian who once lived as a Bacha Posh, the mother of seven-year-old Mehran, who she is raising as a Bacha Posh as well, but for different reasons than in the past. There's Zahra, a teenage student living as a boy who is about to display signs of womanhood as she enters puberty. And Skukria, a hospital nurse who remained in a Bacha Posh disguise until she was twenty, and who now has three children of her own. Exploring the historical roots of this tradition, The Underground Girls of Kabul is a fascinating and moving investigation.

Set to be one of the hugest sports books of the year is Playing It My Way, the auto-biography of the man Brian Lara calls “the greatest cricketer of all time”.

Tendulkar has achieved that rare level of sportsmanship in which he has become both an international star and a hero in his native India. He has been awarded the highest of accolades at home and triumphed to an unprecedented degree at the crease.

One of the most gifted and entertaining batsmen to have played international cricket, he scored more runs and made more centuries than any other player in history – in both Tests and ODIs. He made his first Test century at the age of 17, at the age of 36 he became the first player to make a one-day double century and in 2012 he scored his 100th international hundred. With India he won the World Cup in 2011 and reached the top of the world Test rankings in the same year. In 2013, he retired from cricket after playing his 200th and final Test in front of his home crowd in Mumbai.

"I knew that agreeing to write my story would need me to be completely honest, as that’s the way I have always played the game. It would require talking about a number of aspects I have not shared in public before.

There, I said it. Robert Galbraith is the nom de plume of none other than J. K. Rowling.

Thankfully, even with that cat out of the bag, there is more than enough mystery and intrigue in the pages of The Silkworm.

We have four copies of the fantastically twisty The Silkworm to give away. Grabbing your copy is easy! Just head over to our Mighty Ape Books Facebook page, give us a like and leave a comment to let me know what your pen name would be!

Personally, I'm going with Viggo Z. Sapolsky as a nod to a couple of my favourite writers and, of course, my cat.

Man Booker Prize short-list announced!

Books

Add a comment By Michael

We may not have a Kiwi in the running for the Man Booker Prize this year but the announcement of this year's shortlist is reason for excitement. For the first time the award is open to writers of all nationalities and Australian Richard Flanagan has joined those vying for the prestigious award.

Let's take a brief look at the short-listed titles available for order today.

To Rise Again at a Decent Hour
A big, brilliant, profoundly observed novel about the mysteries of modern life by National Book Award Finalist Joshua Ferris, one of the most exciting voices of his generation. At once laugh-out-loud funny about the absurdities of the modern world, and indelibly profound about the eternal questions of the meaning of life, love and truth, To Rise Again at a Decent Hour is a deeply moving and constantly surprising tour de force. Paul O'Rourke is a man of contradictions: he loves the world, but doesn't know how to live in it. He's a Luddite addicted to his iPhone, a dentist with a nicotine habit, a rabid Red Sox fan devastated by their victories, and an atheist not quite willing to let go of God. Then someone begins to impersonate Paul online, and he watches in horror as a website, a Facebook page, and a Twitter account are created in his name.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North
A novel of the cruelty of war, and tenuousness of life and the impossibility of love. This savagely beautiful novel is a story about the many forms of love and death, of war and truth, as one man comes of age only to discover all that he has lost. The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a big, magnificent novel of passion and horror and tragic irony.‘“My subject is war, and the pity of war. The poetry is in the pity.” Flanagan's triumph is to find poetry without any pity at all.’ – Geordie Williamson, The Australian. ‘A story of war and star-crossed lovers, the novel is also a profound meditation on life and time, memory and forgetting …a magnificent achievement.’ – Katharine England, Adelaide Advertiser. ‘A masterpiece …The Narrow Road is an extraordinary piece of writing, a high point in an already distinguished career.’ – Michael Williams, The Guardian.
