Play Has No Limits on PlayStation®5

By Andi

UPDATED September 17th

Price and release date confirmed for the PlayStation 5!

The wait is finally over! Sony has revealed the price and release date for the PlayStation 5.

Both consoles are available to to pre-order at Mighty Ape right now and will be officially released on November 12 in New Zealand and other select regions.

Pricing has been set at NZ$649 for the Digital Edition, and NZ$819 for the disc-based PlayStation 5. The next generation of PlayStation gaming is almost here, and we're so excited to be right there with you on day one!

In addition to revealing the console's design, we've glimpsed an incredible number of games coming to PlayStation®5 at launch and beyond.

Of course, there's still LOADS of information to come, so sign up to our PlayStation 5 Newsletter so you don't miss a thing!

For now though, let's look at everything that's been revealed for the PS5™…

A wave of Black, White and Blue

While the PS3 and PS4 favoured a traditional “black box” aesthetic, the PlayStation 5 offers a look unlike anything Sony has released before. We'd had glimpses of the contrasting white & black design when Sony revealed the controller, but that was nothing compared to the curved panels and asymmetrical look of the console itself.

For those that have left discs behind and favour digital downloads for their games, Sony will be releasing a Digital Edition of the PS5 alongside it's disc-compatible sibling in 2020. So whether you're all about those downloads, or love nothing more than a wall of game cases, there's something for every PlayStation fan in the next generation.

It's what's on the inside that matters…

Of course a box can only look so pretty – it's got to put its money where its mouth is to keep players happy, right?

With the PS5, players can harness the power of a custom CPU, GPU, and SSD with Integrated I/O that rewrite the rules of what a PlayStation® console can do.

Lightning Speed
Experience lightning-fast loading with an ultra-high-speed SSD, deeper immersion with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and 3D Audio, and an all-new generation of incredible PlayStation games.

Breathtaking Immersion
Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.

DualSense™ Wireless Controller

No, that's not a typo. Every generation of PlayStation has come with a DUALSHOCK™ controller… until now. The change in name makes sense though, given the peripheral has moved away from basic vibration to allow for more sensitive responses via haptic feedback.

The realisation of this is that players will not only feel the rumble of explosions in the controller, but also the tension of a bowstring being pulled back as they squeeze the trigger.

Games

PlayStation Studios has a HUGE number of titles coming only to PlayStation 5. For racing fans, there's Gran Turismo 7, for action fans, Sony has announced both Horizon: Forbidden West and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, with the latter coming Holidays 2020. There's a number of titles for all ages as well, with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Astro's Playroom.

Outside of first-party titles, the PS5 has a titles in development from AAA studios and indies alike, with NBA 2K21, Resident Evil 8, Hitman III, and Destiny 2 all announced for the upcoming console.

  • Kyle says: 12 June 2020, 3:25pm

    @Sebastian - half a kidney

  • Craig says: 12 June 2020, 3:32pm

I'd be too worried about PSN download speeds to ever consider going for the "Digital Edition" of the console. The only way to get decent speeds on PS4 is running a proxy on your PC for the console to run through, so I'll absolutely be going for the disc-based console.

Also, just because you can't list the console for pre-order doesn't mean you can't start taking pre-orders for the games since there is already a section on the site. TAKE MY MONEY! lol

A rough idea on the price of the console?

  • Chloe says: 12 June 2020, 3:52pm

I held off from purchasing the PS4 this year because I knew this was coming along. Can not wait!!

  • Aaron says: 12 June 2020, 4:08pm

@Craig Id be more worried about the prices of the digital copies. At least with hard copies, you can shop around and get a better price, with digital, its take it or leave it. We always get screwed with content here, especially with digital content, i mean its just a file, why should it cost MORE than a hard copy??

  • Dwayne says: 12 June 2020, 4:12pm

Yeah me too, I think about November I heard, and roughly looking at $700 or so I was told, looking forward to it?

  • Gretchen says: 12 June 2020, 4:20pm

I think it's ugly. Why have they made it so white and plastic? I hope they'll bring out a coloured or black edition for people that don't want everything to look like an Apple iProduct

  • Elijah says: 12 June 2020, 4:23pm

Spider-Man: Miles Morales... wasn't Spider-Man PS4 released, like, a little under two years ago? That seems kinda fast to make a sequel... too fast. Hope it wasn't rushed.

  • Alan says: 12 June 2020, 4:25pm

    Unconfirmed price of AUD $1090.

  • jazzlon says: 12 June 2020, 4:43pm

What is the price for the console please??

  • Beau says: 12 June 2020, 5:11pm

But how much is it going to cost me??? Lol

  • karan says: 12 June 2020, 6:33pm

Just the sheer number of games play station has makes it a must have even though the specs don’t match up to the Xbox
But this ‘you first’ game between Microsoft and Sony is a mess, I hope someone comes out with a price, I doubt there will be a lot of room

  • james says: 12 June 2020, 7:46pm

better off building a gaming pc but im going to get one

  • Michael says: 12 June 2020, 7:58pm

Same price point as the PS4. Series X will be the same price. Consoles always run at a loss on launch, the money is in the software.
$799. You heard it here first.

  • Ricky says: 12 June 2020, 8:52pm

This could be a pricey hardware but as always I'll wait for the second gens to come out.

  • Nicholas says: 12 June 2020, 9:05pm

Apparently the price is about $800 USD, so it’s gonna cost and arm and a leg but definitely worth it in my opinion
