"Best Sci-Fi flick in years..."
5 stars"

Whether you are a fan of “Firefly” the TV series that Serenity is based on or not, there is so much to like about this movie that you'll probably turn into a fan anyway. The storyline is smart and intriguing, the character's unique and well played and the dialogue is some of the sharpest and funniest outside of a Tarantino movie. Writer / director Joss Whedon's crew of characters are instantly likeable. Nathan Fillion makes Captain Mal Reynolds a sort of modern day Han Solo whilst the sexiness duties are handled with ease by Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin and Summer Glau. Some of the best lines come from Alan Tudyk and Adam Baldwin and as much as I love Star Wars Episode 3, every time I see Serenity I wish that George Lucas had hired Whedon to spice up that movies dialogue. The effects aren't going to bother ILM or Weta but are still completely convincing and well used. Besides Serenity's budget is a fraction of most movies ILM are involved with. For Firefly fans there are are some shock character exits but they only serve to imfuse some urgency and a sense of threat into procedings as the movie winds up to a very satisfying conclusion. All in all Serenity is one of the finest Science Fiction movies of the last two decades and although the cinema box office was disappointing hopefully massive DVD's sales will force Universal to re-consider starting up the Firefly TV series again and everything can go back to beng just “shiny”.

"For fans only"
3 stars"

I booked this movie on Sky Digital recently.

Didn't like it at all. Felt like a 2hr pilot for a television series. I watched all of it and liked none of it.

The crew's captain is completely unlikeable. He's not the traditional good guy. I suppose if you want someone who is a total badass then he fits the bill, but I think he would make a much better bad guy. Let's put it this way, they've gone for a Han Solo type character, except here you get a guy who not only shoot's first but goes on to wipe out the entire cantina for kicks.

I did catch part of an episode of Firefly after seeing the film and I saw the captain shoot some guys horse so the horse fell on him while he was on the ground.

I would seriously consider watching the Firefly series first and getting to know these characters, otherwise there's a good chance you'll end up like me wondering what all the fuss is about.

"Good effects, poor dialogue"
3 stars"

The first 1/2 hr of this movie really didnt appear to be going anywhere. We are introduced to characters given some pretty basic lines. At one point the ship was to explode in an attempt to land, the captain calls over the intercom about possible explosion and a crew member goes something like ‘explode??? what do you mean explode? i dont want to explode…’ the guy was butch, but sounded like a kid. tacky to say the least. All my mates were like “what?” Lines aside, the special effects are on par with some big films though there really needed to be a stronger more determined character this film lacked. The captain was as mentioned by another reviewer a little confused by role. Better off as a bad guy full stop and not very charismatic as the ‘han-solo’ figure they must've been looking to portray I have the 2 disc set. Would rate this 3/5.
