Presentation: 10/10 Rockstar has actually added a main menu screen to this
game, unlike their GTA games, and its beautiful. The loading screen is
innovative and all the in-game menus look great and are easy to use.
Graphics: 10/10 I read somewhere that Rockstar used the same engine for this
game as GTA IV, but trust me, it looks way better than GTA IV. GTA
IV's graphics were really good for an open-world game and a full sized Liberty
City but this game's world is massive and way bigger and it still manages to
look better. So one has to commend Rockstar for that. The maximum resolution is
still 720p for this game on a PS3, so that is a let down if you have 1080p tv
like me but its still a looker. The animations are very realistic, for example,
you go flying in the air, if you are riding a horse at full speed and it gets
shot and the realistic panic when you point a gun at an innocent, or a poor soul
getting dragged by the outlaws with a lasso. You can see tiny details like the
muscles of the horse.
Sound: 10/10 Rockstar always nails the voice acting and sound effects and it
continues that with this game. The voice acting is excellent. I have never been
a big fan of the music from the west but you can't blame them for having a
relevant soundtrack for this game. It serves its purpose. Every person sounds
different and says a seemingly infinite number of different things depending on
the circumstance.
Gameplay: 9.5/10 You can do everything, you expect to be able to do in a
Rockstar open-world game like GTA. There are a wide variety of missions, from
hunting to horse races to taming horses to the more serious story missions. The
new Red Eye shooting system is even more fun than the VATS system from Fallout
3, where everything gets slowed down and allows you to take a good aim at who
and where you want to shoot at. It's not perfect though. It has its fair share
of annoying bugs, especially to do with the horses. They never stay in one place
and seem to disappear if you are away from them for too long. Also, I came
across this problem where, my horse was right next to me (as indicated by the
map) but I couldnt mount it. These small bugs aside, and some of the rather
slow missions which start off the game, like herding packs of different animals,
its a massive open world with a lot to do, which is fun, more often than not.
The sidegames are a lot of fun and range from poker to five fillets and are
really lifelike and fun. The in-game movie theatres have some original and
funny – short silent movies, well worth watching.
Lasting Appeal: 10/10 Once you get through the slow start, its an exciting
and fun game which should take you atleast 20 hours to finish. There is a lot
to do. When you are travelling between lands, random blue spots pop-up on the
map, indicating, an optional mission you can undertake. These are very fun and
range from saving people from packs of wolves to taking out a whole mob of
thieves and their head. The multiplayer is a lot of fun. With not too many good
games around, and given people arent still obsessing over Modern Warfare 2 and
Bad Company 2, you should see a fair lot of people to play this game with
online. Theres a whole load of multiplayer options from, free roam where you
meet up with other people and do missions together or just turn it into a free
for all, last man standing, to proper deathmatches, duels, etc.
Overall: 9.9/10 For me, GTA IV is still the best that Rockstar has developed
to date. This game looks way better, has an excellent and fun new aiming
mechanic in Red Eye, has plenty of sidegames and activities which are actually a
whole lot of fun rather than GTA IV's bowling etc which seemed like a chore to
me but the annoying bugs are what keep it from beating GTA IV. GTA IV had its
fair share too but none as noticeable as the ones present here. To be honest,
these should not be present in the final version of a much anticipated game but
hopefully they will be taken care of through a patch and they actually do not
detract from the thrilling experience this game has to offer.
People who did not like GTA IV, should not let the fact that I think this
isnt better than that game, stop them from getting this one. They are two
totally different games and one owes it to themselves to give it a shot.
