This is a blockbuster, there's no doubt about that. Orlando Bloom, Kiera Knightly, Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp. They don't get much bigger than that.
The reason I bought this DVD was for Johnny Depp's acting. It is incredible. It would appear he is constantly drunk. I read somewhere that he almost got fired because his acting is so – out there. The Oscar nomination was well deserved.
But I was in for a surprise. The rest of the movie is also really good. The storyline is detailed with a lot of background story before the film begins. There is also lots of little quirks such as Barbarrosa's apple and Sparrow's gun and hat. The fight scenes (with the exception of the last) also actually look realistic. The characters actually look like they're trying to kill the other rather than just swinging their sword like other movie. And Orlando actually acts well!
5 stars. The ultimate blockbuster.
